Kulashekar Rao spent Sunday night outside Sophia High School to see if he would be lucky enough to collect the application form at 12 noon on Monday, for his daughter Bhargavi’s nursery admission. His brother Narahari Rao, too, had been waiting outside the school since late Sunday evening, to get the form for his daughter, Kanchan.

Monday morning saw several apprehensive parents queuing up outside school gates hoping to get the admission forms at the earliest, considering the long drawn procedure that lay ahead thereafter. “Since, we want our children to get into this school, this is the least we can do,” said the brothers. Still others took shifts to stand in the queue. “My brother came here at 8 last night, and I took over from him at 8 in the morning,” said a parent.

Even though admission forms are being given out till January 7, many heard that application forms are in limited numbers and thought it wise to wait at the gates as early as possible. “I know, the intake is really small, and I also hear that the application forms are few,” said a parent, justifying the reason for his early arrival. Some parents, were visibly angry, about the whole admission process.

“This is such a hassle. I have been waiting in front of several schools, just so that my daughter gets into a good school,” said Sapna Jain.

“At every single school, the queue is so long. I have tried at NAFL, Vidyasagar, National Public School, in fact at all reputed schools in the city,” said Vanitha Jain, another parent. “While I stand at queues, my husband looks after our child,” said Jain.

While some parents were particular that their children attend a school with a brand name, many wondered if the wait was worth it. “I wonder if all this is really worth it,” said Avinash Kannangal, who had been waiting since 6 am. Ramaswamy Arunachalam felt that the queue was worth it if his grand-daughter’s future was secured till she finishes her schooling.

The queue kept growing, well into Monday noon.
