Fifty-six-year-old Komal Jain must have thought it was a nightmare. But it was not. Jain, a resident of Jaldeep-5 bungalows in Guma, was woken up by four masked men in the wee hours of Monday.
The men, wearing only vests, forcibly entered his house and threatened Jain and his wife of dire consequences if they tried to make a noise. The robbers collected the cash and valuables and walked away.
The robbers, probably members of the infamous ‘Chaddi Banyan Dhari’ gang, were apparently not through yet. They moved to another house, belonging to Dilip Khatri. Sources said Khatri put up a fight, but could not prevent eight men armed with stones from entering the house.
The robbers broke open the door of the bedroom and took away cash, valuables and cellphones worth around Rs 1.68 lakh.
The assailants also assaulted Khatri, says the complaint he filed with Sarkhej police. Incidentally, Babuji Thakore, the watchman of the society, awoke after hearing screams from Khatri’s house. He immediately ran towards the house only to find the robbers pelting stones at him.
Thakore told DNA, “I ran towards the house after I heard a woman scream. I was surprised to see the robbers holding stones in their hands. I called
up some labourers living nearby for help. However, they continued pelting stones at us. I ran back to my shaft and hid inside fearing for my life.” Thakore said there were at least eight robbers, and some of them were wearing jeans and t-shirt.
Sources said one person who rushed to Babuji’s rescue was assaulted and later admitted to a hospital. Inspector at Sarkhej police station SS Gadhvi said, “After committing robbery, they fled in different directions.”
Informed sources said the robbers had also tried to enter another bungalow in the society but could not succeed.
