Mumbai: Towards the fag end of the previous government's reign, education made headlines. Once the new school minister takes over, he/she will have to make some headline-making decisions on:

Online admissions: The former education minister, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, took the decision to extend the process of online admission to junior colleges across the state, but issued no government resolution to that effect. The new minister will have to take a call on online admission and its implementation.

Making class X board exams optional: HRD minister Kapil Sibal's idea of making class X board exams optional has not beenaccepted on paper by any of the state boards. But most of them are deliberating on it. The Maharashtra board will have to do a feasibility study as soon as the new government is in place.

ATKT/supplementary exams: The previous government had wanted to introduce supplementary exams within a month of the declaration of results. However, due to the lack of resources it was not implemented this year. Instead, it allowed failed students to keep terms (ATKT). This was challenged in the court, which allowed the state to continue with the ATKT policy for all. But as the court decision came mid-term, the government could not implement it in full. The new government will have to conduct a study on the infrastructure available in state colleges. It has to be done before the results are out next year if it has to accommodate the students kept on hold this year.
