Deteriorating SSLC examination results, especially in rural areas, seem to worry primary and secondary education minister Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri. At a state-level workshop for the heads of zilla panchayat and municipal corporation standing committees for education and health, the minister stressed the need to identify the reasons as to why students’ performance in SSLC exam is deteriorating.

Addressing a workshop, ‘The role of local governing bodies in the implementation of educational programmes’, Kageri said: “The success rate of students from rural areas in SSLC exam is just 50%. We have to convene a meeting of headmasters, teachers and officials to identify issues and rectify mistakes,” he said.

“Most students are failing in one subject. Does this mean that the respective teachers are not good enough? Can students read and pronounce effectively? Let us identify such trends,” Kageri said.

The minister said standing committees on education have a key role to play in the implementation of educational programmes.

“I know there is huge pressure on you (standing committees), but your priority should be quality education,” he said.
