With the first merit list for bifocals finally out on Friday, colleges were told to hold provisional admissions, so that students can opt for better courses later.
To secure a seat temporarily, a student will have to pay a fee of Rs50.
“We do not want students to pay the fees in full to any college right now. If anyone wants to opt for some other college at a later stage, s/he can easily do so,” an education department official said.
Students will have to pay the full fee once the second round of bifocals gets over on August 5.
However, students happy with colleges they have secured can pay the entire fee on Saturday and secure seats permanently.
“It is a good decision. It gives students a chance for improvement. But it means more paperwork for the colleges,” Kirti Narain, principal, Jai Hind College, Churchgate, said.
The betterment choice, introduced last year, helps students to move up the lists of preferred colleges submitted by them, as and when there are vacancies due to students not taking up the allotted seats.
