The University of Mumbai has set up two committees to deal with issues relating to Veermata Jijabai Techological Institute (VJTI), Matunga. “While one committee will look at routine autonomy renewal, the second has been set up to look at alleged irregularities and complaints with respect to the conducting of examinations and administration, among other [issues] at the institute,” said a university official.
VJTI, which has already initiated the review process for its autonomy renewal, had asked Mumbai University to process the case for continuance of the status. Meanwhile, the second panel, according to the university, is a ‘high-power review committee to look at various issues of VJTI”. “The purview of the second committee will be to review the academic and administrative lacunae, if any, at the institute,” said committee member Anjali Kanitkar.
A committee set up in 2008 to make inquiries into financial assessment and alleged academic irregularities at VJTI had submitted its report in 2009, pointing out certain academic and administrative lacunae. “However, the report does not substantiate clearly what it says. It does not mention specifically what these gaps are,” a university official said.
The second committee will be a continuation of the earlier panel, and its first meeting is scheduled either for November end or the first week of December, when it is expected to chart out a course of action and a timeline for the proceedings.
