Over 70% of school kids in Ahmedabad are logged in

Amdavadi kids are well-connected. No, we don't mean their relation with the who's who of society. What we mean is that they are well-connected as far as the internet is concerned.

The second annual Web 2.0 Generation survey conducted by Tata Consultancy Services has found that more than 70% of average Amdavadi youth spend over 30 minutes on the web everyday.

The survey covered over 10,000 school going children between the age of 12 to 18 across 11 cities in India during 2009-10. Among the 70% who surf the web for various reasons, most of the youth spend time on the net in the range of 30 minutes to one hour.

As far as source of information is concerned, the survey found that Amdavadi youth rely more on Google (82%) followed by Wikipedia (71%).

The survey also found that around 85% of the kids surveyed across the country use Google for information while Wikipedia is used by 77%.

Talking further about access to the web, as much as 81% of Amdavadi children prefer to access internet from home. Also, the social networking trend is strong with 85% of them connected to various such sites.

Orkut and Facebook are the top favourites among the kids. Of the children surveyed, 65% of Amdavadis prefer to be online during their spare time followed by activities like sports, reading, music, TV and others.
Commenting on the same, a class IX student of HB Kapadia, Tarun Gagdekar said, "Social networking sites like Facebook help me stay connected to my friends. Also, when it comes to school assignments, internet seems to be a boon with information readily available at the click of a mouse on sites like Google."

As far as academics are concerned, the survey found that nearly 78% of Amdavadi students plan to go abroad for graduation. When quizzed about their career plans most said they wanted to be somewhere where they could learn new skills.Interesting workplace, salary, experience, comfort and travel all came second in their list of importance.

Ajoy Mukherjee, VP (head), Global Human Resources said, "Nearly half of India's total population is under the age of 20 which comes in the youth category. Thus, we plan to use the findings of the survey to understand the next generation in a better way."

He said that this is the new, socially connected India and it is important that we understand them better. As far as industry is concerned, most of the Amdavadi students want to pursue career in engineering, IT, media and entertainment followed by banking, financial services, government, tourism and hospitality.

It is a departure from the usual for the business-minded Amdavadis. When compared to the Indian average and metros, the survey found that the mobile and home PC penetration in Ahmedabad was good.

When quizzed about products and brands, the children also emerged as very brand conscious.
