As the Common Admission Test (CAT) to the premier Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) goes online, Mumbai’s own management institute has followed suit with an announcement of online entrance test for the course. Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Juhu, will be conducting an online entrance exam for Narsee Monjee Management Aptitude Test (NMAT)–2010 for MBA.
The move will benefit applicants from the United Kingdom and other Asian countries. NMIMS will be offering 300 seats under the MBA programme, 30 seats under the MBA (Banking), 30 seats under MBA (Capital market), 30 seats under MBA (Actuarial Science), and 60 seats under MBA (Pharmaceutical Management).
“The online move will help in handling a huge number of candidates as the estimated projection for the applications is over 50,000 this year as compared to 46,000 applications last year,” said Rajan Saxena, vice-chancellor. The two-hour exam will be conducted in staggered batches at various centers across India, Australia, UK and 12 Asian countries within a window period of 10 days, starting January 30 to February 8, 2010.
As far as the format is concerned, the entrance test is similar to the CAT. It comprises of three sections — Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Analysis and Logical Reasoning - which carry equal weightage. The registration for the entrance test began on Tuesday. The registration fee is Rs1,650.
According to Saxena, the online venture will not only lead to uniformity and transparency in assessment, but also reduce malpractice. “The concept is not mere ideation but a step that will promote wider participation among aspirants,” he said. Aspirants who had registered for CAT will sit for the online tests from November 28 to December 7.
