Starting from next week, the Gujarat University (GU) students of under graduate courses can log on to YouTube to attend important lectures of their subjects.
Surprised? Pinch yourself because it's for real. The GU has decided to upload lectures on some crucial topics of every subject on YouTube in form of a digital video and in an animated format. In fact, lectures on five topics of zoology are almost ready and will be uploaded on one of the most popular online video broadcasting sites soon.
Talking about the project, Parimal Trivedi, GU vice-chancellor, said, "We are working on this project for the past six months. Since the university has received a Rs7 crore grant from University Grant Commission (UGC) for technical and digital extension, we have decided to make available some popular lectures of varsity professors online. We are making a digital library of lectures and plan to have it on YouTube and GU website."
Trivedi further said, "We are ready with five lectures of zoology. The display page on YouTube will be split in two parts, one will be a section of videos while the other will offer scanned text of lectures with an audio recording. It will be a complete digital animation learning process."
The five topics of zoology that will be converted into digital animated lecture are ABC of Phytum-Arthropoda, structural organisation and classification of non-chordates, principles and salient features of animal classification, cell therapy and diversity of cell size and shape.
"The cost of one lecture is Rs2 lakh, so we have spent around Rs10 lakh on these five lectures. We have plans to come up with 900 such animated lectures and upload them on YouTube as well as on the university website. There will also be links to other reference works so that students can explore more on the topics. In addition to this, the page will also have a test so that students can check their understating on the subject after going through the lectures. All the lectures will be in English language and will be of under graduate level," added Trivedi.
