With the nursery admissions to start in some time, the parents of three-year-olds seeking nursery seats in city’s premier schools are gearing up for the toughest interview. With fierce competition and limited seats, parents are leaving no stone unturned to succeed in the race for seats. While several parents are enrolling their children in pre-nursery classes, others are joining personality development classes to improve on their presentation skills.

Amrita Prabhu, a Powai resident, enrolled in a mother-toddler programme to encourage her eight-month-old daughter to be socially well behaved. The trend started a few years back and has seen a steady rise. “A few years ago, hardly anyone would enroll for such courses. But now, parents want their kids to be well behaved and talk fluently,” said Shahana Gupta, teacher, Little Dew Drops Montessori School, Lokhandwala.

Through the course, mother and children are involved in fun activities where motor co-ordination, hand-eye coordination, language and social skills of the child are developed.
In several cases, the local creche or playgroup doubles up as a coaching class for children eligible for pre primary seats. “We toilet train them, develop their social skills and basic conversational skills. The session goes on from three to six months prior to the admission season,” said Preeti Khapre, Little Hearts Playgroup, Kanjurmarg.
