NID to celebrate golden jubilee through the year

National Institute of Design (NID) will be celebrating its golden jubilee year by highlighting sustainable, universal, and inclusive designs for the masses and also for the micro small and medium scale sector.

Celebrations will commence from NID's convocation ceremony on December 14, and will continue till the next convocation.

NID director Pradyumna Vyas, said, "The vice president of India, Dr M Hamid Ansari, will be the chief guest at the golden jubilee celebrations. We will have conferences, exhibitions, workshops and the like the whole year through across different parts of the country, highlighting the importance of design in the overall development of society."

To begin with, Vision 2010, film festival, Alpavirama, animation festival, Chitrakatha, CII-NID design annual summit in New Delhi, and many other events have been planned for the celebrations.

"NID was India's first design institute and hence we are intent on celebrating the fifty years of formal design education in the country. Through this, people will witness a design movement, throughout 2011. A design clinic for instance has successfully been held in Delhi and Bangalore and now it is happening in Pune. We want the micro, small and medium scale sector to take advantage of the design services," Vyas said.

Vyas added that design was an important component in bringing out the humane aspect in development. For the same, sensitisation of the younger generation is vital and this is where exhibitions come into play.

Vyas said, "Design is always considered from its aesthetics point of view. We want to make a statement that design is an integral part of development of the society and we need to incorporate it in social, crafts, city service, infrastructure and similar forms of development."

"NID alumni are the driving force behind the celebrations ," Vyas concluded.
