The number of students opting for basic mathematics has gone up amid rise in application of pure mathematics in several fields including physics, engineering and finance, leading academicians said.
Department of science and technology has also initiated several programmes to attract students to mathematics, who otherwise go for engineering and medicines, eminent mathematics professor Mahan Maharaj of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekabnanda University, West Begal said.
Mahan was here to participate in a workshop on 'Perspectives in Mathematics', meant for 40 MSc students, to mark the birth anniversary of great mathematician S Ramanujan at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.
Students were selected for the workshop from various instititions and universities across the country.
Prof M Ram Murthy, Queen's University, Canada, said in India and elsewhere in the world, many young people were going for mathematics with the advent of computer science, information technology and nano technology. Besides, mathematics is very useful in cryptography and data compression, and therefore many students are getting attracted to maths globally, Murthy said.
