After enrolling 800 tribal children in leading private and residential schools, the tribal development department now wants to start dedicated English medium schools for tribal students.
The state has 2.06 lakh tribal students studying in 1,100 schools. However, only 1,000 students go to English medium schools. Tribal development minister Babanrao Pachpute said on Tuesday that he wants all the students to attend English medium schools. “This would be facilitated by starting one school each in the 66 tehsils and 16 districts,” he said. “We want to bring them to the mainstream by giving them quality education.”
Pachpute said that his department has decided to act hard against those schools who have been found wanting. The department has served notices to nearly 20 managements asking them to explain about the pathetic condition of their schools. There are nearly 500 government aided tribal schools.
Following the Centre’s directives, the department has started the process of transferring
the title of the land on to the names of the tribals possessing them. “There are 2.77 lakh tribals who have claimed for the transfer. We have so far transferred the title for 4,500 tribals. The procedure which started in February 2008, is expected to be complete in a
few months,” said tribal development secretary PS Meena.
