Even though the secondary school certificate (SSC) exams are drawing to an end this Friday, the state government is in no position to meet its self-prescribed deadline for finalising the online admission process for junior college.

The school education minister, Balasaheb Thorat, announced that SSC students will get the information booklet for online exams on the last day of their exams. However, it may now be delayed by a week or more, which is bound to play havoc on students' vacation plans.

Thorat said, "The booklets are almost ready. Some last minute changes were to be made. Students will not get their booklet on the last day of the exams. But it will not be a long delay. It will be distributed within a week from the last day of their exam. The booklet needs to be perfect, and hence we are not hurrying it up."

Understandably, parents are upset that the vacation plans may go for a toss if a fixed date is not provided by the government. Parents-Teachers United Forum president, Arundhati Chauhan, said, "They should inform the students as early as possible to avoid chaos. Last year, it was a complete mess with students filling up the wrong details in the forms. At least the booklet should be given out in time. Once the vacations start, it will be very difficult to get the students back to school. How will they inform the students? Schools cannot call up individual students."

Vanita Parekh, a parent of an SSC student from Andheri, said, "The government has already kept us in suspense regarding the process of online admissions. If they delay further, we might have to cancel our vacation plans of going to our native town as schools will call the students back."

However, an official from the education department said, "We want to hand out a perfect guide, so that students don't make mistakes. We are working on public holidays to complete it as quickly as possible. There isa meeting on the issue on Gudi Padwa. The booklets will be available with the schools and there won't be a deadline for collecting them."
