The merit list was to be out at 5pm on Friday. But it was posted by the education department as late as 11pm. All hell broke loose in the intervening period. Many students panicked on not getting SMS alerts about seat allotments.
Some were lucky to come to know about their allotments around 8.30pm. For others, the agony dragged on as the colleges will have to wait till Saturday morning to display the list.
More than 31,000 students applied for bifocals courses in colleges in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), but only 12,530 seats are available, including bifocals in Science and Commerce.
“We were given access to the site by the education department and were asked to download the merit list and display it at the college. But so far, we have not succeeded in downloading the document. The online system worked perfectly before, but we do not know what went wrong today,” Kirti Narain, principal of Jai Hind College, Churchgate, said.
Kavita Rege, principal Sathaye College, Vile Parle, said, “I was in my office till 9 pm, but we were not able to see the list. It is bad that so much time was wasted. By the time the list finally came, it was too late to be displayed. Now, we will check it first thing in the morning.”
However, some students managed to see their allotments after a wait of more than three hours. Narendran Bhaskar, who scored 91.1%, came to know that he had got a seat in Computer Science at Valia College, Andheri. “I expected that there would be a delay of some kind. I was sitting on the computer the whole day waiting for the results. When it finally came, I was relieved.”
Riva Mendonca, who scored 78%, from St Louis School, Andheri, was not accepted in the first round. “I have been waiting on the edge of my seat since 5pm for the list to be out. Twice I went to my school to check out the list. But the authorities said that they too had not got it. I did not even get an SMS alert,” she complained.
