With more parents preferring international curriculum to the state board, even the tier two cities such as Nashik, Aurangabad, Solapur etc are joining the bandwagon. The Cambridge International Examination (CIE) board has recently seen an upsurge in the number of schools applying from tier two cities.
“Maharashtra has 80 CIE curriculum schools, the maximum in the country. But a trend we have observed lately is that tier two cities are also keen on our curriculum. Earlier, there was a belief that only students who plan to pursue further studies abroad will suit the CIE curriculum,” said Ian Chambers, regional manager in India, CIE.
With major institutes in India recognising the qualification of a CIE curriculum, students from second rung cities are also looking at the option. “In the last few months, CIE has received recognitions from Panjab University, Chandigarh, University of Madras, University of Pune and ILS Law College in Pune - one of the top law colleges in India,” Chambers added.
Recently, two schools from Solapur and Aurangabad got affiliated to the cambridge board, with Nashik having around three schools with the curriculum. There are approximately 230 schools offering the cambridge curriculum, out of which nearly 50 schools are in Mumbai. “There is an upsurge in the number of schools applying the A levels (equivalent to class XI and XII) this year.
Schools are trying to accommodate their own students after class X,” said Chambers.
