India bagged five gold medals and one silver medal at the International Olympiad on Astronomy (IOA) which concluded today at Hangzhou, China. India topped the event in the medal tally, according to Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE)here.
This is the third time that India won five gold medals in IOA and this time there were only six students instead of eight as in the past, HBCSE said adding that this year's performance is considered as the best in the last 11 years.
Chirag Modi, Indore, MP, Nitesh Kumar Singh, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Shantanu Agarwal, Patna, Bihar, Prafulla Dhariwal, Pune, Maharashtra and Mayank Raj Mehta, Deogarh, Jharkhand won gold medals while I Jeevana Priya won silver medal, HBCSE said.
The IOA was held from November 8 and the Indian team of students - three from the Senior section and three from the Junior section was led by Anand Ghaisa (HBCSE). Shirish Phathare of HBCSE, Rajshree Thakur of Chougule College of Madgaon, Goa, accompanied the team as scientific observers.
A total of 17 teams from 16 countries participated and some of the countries included China, Korea, Sweden, Russia, Italy, Serbia and Indonesia.
