While the global economic recession didn't spare the campus placements of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) last year, the institute is standing alert this year and has made preparations to adopt a different placement strategy this time.

Instead of a company focused placement system, the institute is looking forward to emphasise upon sectors in their placement in the coming year. The institute will hold a conclave with various companies that had been regular recruiters in the institute in the past few years to discuss and get their feedback upon the new plan, on Tuesday in Mumbai.

Placement coordinator professor Saral Mukherjee said, "Since the number of students in the campus has been increasing every year, the existing system of placement has faced various problems in terms of logistics and high cost. So we have a plan to adopt a different placement system this year."

He said, "Sometimes students are unable to join the sector of their choice and this leads to waste cost accumulation. The new system aims to look into this issue and to achieve the right fit between candidates and recruiters."

However, IIMA has not yet finalised upon the new system of placement. While the new system will be a joint effort of the institute and its regular recruiters, the latter's opinion is yet to be taken into account. Said Mukherjee: "We will hold a conference with our regular recruiters and take feedback about the plan from them. We will redesign the plan if required." Both private and public companies have been invited for the conference to be held in Mumbai.

The new plan is likely to adopt strategies which emphasise upon different sectors rather than individual companies. The new plan might also extend the slot 0 (first day) of the placement so that students and companies get more time to interact amongst themselves.
