HSC results: Girls on top in Gujarat

Out of the 1,47,406 girl students who appeared in the exam, 1,35,391 have passed. In the case of boys, however, out of the 2,03,738 students who took the exam, only 1,66,278 have passed.

HSC results: Girls on top in Gujarat

Girls have done it again. As in the HSC (science stream) examination, girls have outperformed boys in this year's HSC (general stream) exams too. The results of the exam, which was held in March by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB), were announced here on Thursday.

Out of the 1,47,406 girl students who appeared in the exam, 1,35,391 have passed. In the case of boys, however, out of the 2,03,738 students who took the exam, only 1,66,278 have passed.

Around 85.91% of the total number of students (both boys and girls) who appeared in the Class 12 (general stream) examination this year, have passed. This is 0.60% higher than last year. The HSC (general stream) includes commerce, arts, vocational and post-basic disciplines.

The state topper in this examination, too, is a girl. Bela Shah, a student of Shri SG Dholakiya Memorial High School, Rajkot, has stood first in the state with 95.71% marks. She scored 670 marks out of 700.

Chandresh Butani, a student of PP Savani Vidhya Bhavan, Surat, has stood second in the state. He scored 94.43% in the exam.
In Ahmedabad, however, Bhoomi Shah, a student of Shri Jivkorbai Lallubhai Uchchatar Madhyamik Shala, Maninagar, has topped the district with 94% marks. She is ranked third in the state and she shares this rank with Jinal Mehta, a student of CGSMVM Ambaba Haripur Girls English School, Surat.
Another Ahmedabad girl, Bhavya Shah, a student of HBK New High School, Dilli Darwaja, has stood fourth in the state with 93.86% marks. She shares the fourth rank with Shyam Parekh, a student of Shri SG Dholakiya Memorial High School, Rajkot.

Out of the 3,51,144 students who appeared in this year's HSC (general stream) examination, 3,01,669 have passed. Of the successful students, 55,829 have passed with distinction, 88,958 in the first class, 1,22,804 in the second class and 34,078 students have cleared the exam in the pass class.

Of the 16 students who share the top 10 ranks in the state, nine are from Ahmedabad district, four from Rajkot, three from Surat and one is from Valsad district.

A Sindhi medium student figures in the top 10 list this year. Bhavesh Hotwani, the student of a Sindhi-medium institution, Dr CG Higher Secondary School, is ranked 8th in the state with 93.29%.

Manthan Khokhani, a student of Nirman High School Uchchatar Madhyamik Shala Panchvati, Ahmedabad, is ranked 9th with 92.86% marks. He is the only English medium student to figure in the top 10 list this year.

The success rate of English medium students in the exam continues to be higher than that of Gujarati medium students. Of the total number of English medium students who took the exam this year, 90.31% have passed. The pass percentage for Gujarati medium students, however, is 85.85%.

State education minister Ramanlal Vora announced the results of the HSC (general stream) examination-2010 on Thursday at the Circuit House in Shahibaug, Ahmedabad.
