HRD ministry’s order on pay hike upsets IIMA professors

The professors of IIMA are disappointed at the response of the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry to the memorandum seeking a pay hike that IIM and IIT professors had earlier submitted to the ministry.

In response to the memorandum, the Union HRD ministry issued an order (dated September 16, 2009) for a pay revision of the employees of Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), but the so-called ‘pay revision’ will not lead to higher pay for IIM teaching staff.

A senior IIMA professor said on Friday that they had received a communication from the HRD ministry on Thursday. “The ministry’s order does not address our demand for higher pay,” he said. “It does not mention any changes that would lead to higher pay for IIM teachers.”

Giving an example, the professor said the ministry’s order seems to suggest certain changes in the salary paid to assistant professors at IIMs after certain years of service. “But that provision is already in place insofar as the salary paid to assistant professors is concerned,” he said. The ministry’s proposals, however, will lead to some changes in the salary paid to IIT teachers but not in the salary of IIM professors or assistant professors.

Earlier, IIMA professors had talked of going on strike if the Union HRD ministry ignored their demand for a pay hike.“The ministry’s order discusses things which are mostly irrelevant to the key demand mentioned in our memorandum,” the IIMA professor said.

“It is clear that the ministry has no intention of conceding our demand. We will hold a faculty meeting in a couple of days to discuss the ministry’s response and decide on the future course of action.”
