In today's competitive world with multinationals knocking at India's doorstep, making a niche for yourself and standing out in terms of your career capabilities is a must. For a person interested in pursuing business management as a career, graduation plays an important role.

The major subjects to be covered are marketing, accounts and finance, which need a good base. Keeping this in consideration, while a graduate degree in any field makes you eligible; a bachelors degree in business management (BMS), a bachelors degree in business administration (BBA) or a bachelors degree in commerce (BCOM) are the ideal choices.

“A BMS degree is basically a bachelor's degree in business management and is a three year integrated full time course offered by the Mumbai University,” explains Dharmapal Rathod who has completed the BMS and MBA courses.

He says, “With globalization changing the employment scenario all over the world, the course is designed keeping in sync with the ever increasing need for management students on a global level. The course curriculum has been practically designed in order to meet the increasing demand for more number of professionally certified management executives in the global market.”

Manjit Kumar Samal, an MBA with a B Com graduate degree, says, “A B Com or technically speaking a bachelor's course in commerce is also ideal as it prepares you for an MBA. But it is more of a theoretical course and does not specifically specialize to cater to the MBA degree.” Any person with a Higher Secondary Certificate with background in any field can enroll for the B Com course, whereas In order to be eligible for the BMS course a student should have completed the HSC or equivalent examinations with a minimum of 50% marks.

Dharmapal who always wanted to pursue a career in business administration opted for a BMS course at the undergraduate level, as it was the best base he could have for his master's degree.
Students who are planning to take up a BMS course must know that is more of a practical course than a theoretical one.

The course structure of Bachelor of Management Studies includes an exhaustive training with the help of latest technological devices, industrial visits, and practical experience and summer internship wherever it is possible. Whereas a B Com is a graduation degree course that prepares you to be able step anywhere in the vast field of commerce, while giving you a strong base for an MBA as well.

That is the reason why innovation and creativity are essential qualities for students who wish to pursue any of these courses. Also required are a dynamic approach and the enthusiasm to keep breaking your own records.

If a standalone graduation course makes you eligible for a job, why is there a need to pursue an MBA? This is a commonly asked question, to which Dharmapal's response is, “If you want a jump start to your career then an MBA is a must. A BMS graduate undoubtedly has the qualification but an MBA gives you the required experience and training to start at a better level and move up faster and faster as compared to a standalone graduation course.”

MBA stands for Masters of Business Administration, and this is a post-graduate degree in business communication. It is a business management course, which equips one to have skills and knowledge necessary to run a business.

To this Dharmpal adds, “For such course, a person has a choice to apply for Full-time or Part time or Distance MBA. A graduate, being a fresher, finds it difficult to excel in management and leadership positions. Pursuing a management education course helps in shaping up the personality to take up the managerial role in the work field.”

An MBA degree can also benefit those in positions in business and management, especially those in executive and managerial positions. To become eligible for an MBA you need to have a bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline by a recognized University.

Also, your written score, group discussion and personal interview marks matter. In an MBA course the various kinds specialisations that are available are, Finance, Marketing, Human Resource, Operations fields, International business, entrepreneurship, Information Technology etc.

“You maybe an Engineer or BSC or a BA but you can opt for an MBA. There are several specializations so it completely depends on the individual whether you want to opt for Marketing or HR or Finance or any other specialization. Any person whether he is BA or BCOM or engineer or BMS should have a fair knowledge about economics, and accountancy before joining the institute. This will help a person to get a broader view of what he will be learning during the MBA period,” Manjit explains.

When quizzed on what is it that someone should expect as a part of their job profile after the completion of your post graduate degree in business management, Manjit shares, “I believe in the saying 'It is the right attitude and not aptitude that defines the altitude'.

Being an MBA one has to believe with strong determination, persistence and single minded focus, one can achieve success in every goal that one aspires for. As a long term career objective, one has to grow up the corporate ladder and become a manager in their respected field and acquire more responsibility, lead a team of people and get more turnovers for organization.”
