Mumbai: The hospitality sector offers a widespread spectrum of courses to choose from. Diplomas, certificate courses and degree courses affiliated to various universities are offered by various private institutes in the country. These institutes have their own entrance tests, followed by group discussions and personal interviews.
"The primary areas of function in a hospitality business are food production, food and beverage service, front office operation and house keeping. Degree courses offered by all institutes train students in these basic functions," said Vivek More faculty at Kohinoor College of Hotel and Tourism Management Studies, Mumbai. "The demand for hospitality graduates is enormous apart from hotels, airlines and travel sectors they are being hired even at call centres. This is because they are trained with the right soft skills required by the person," said he added. This institute offers two three- year full time degree courses Bachelor in Hotel and Tourism Management Studies (BHTMS) prescribed by the University of Mumbai and BSc in Hospitality, Catering and Tourism, affiliated to Sikkim Manipal University.
Vocational education is not far behind in grooming hospitality aspirants. A number of super specialised certificate courses are available for students to pursue. "Our craftsmanship courses are affiliated to the Maharashtra State Board of Vocational Education. These six months to one year programmes teach students hotel management and catering technology,cookery, bakery andfood and beverage service," said More.
"Tour managers,immigration officers and even flight stewards are hospitality graduates. They are in good demand as travel and tourism will never die," explained professor Rod Bunting of the Kohinoor IMI School of Hospitality, Khandala (KIMI). This institute offers a BBA in hotel and tourism management in association with the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU). "In the third year, our students have the option of studying in Switzerland and completing their course," said Bunting.
