High cut-off to increase stress level of students: Experts

For Maina Singh, Delhi University’s first cut-off result resulted into many more sleepless nights as even after getting 95% marks in best of her four subjects in commerce stream she has no option but to wait for the second list to get admission in college of her choice.

Maina is not alone, thousands of students from across India have thronged the DU campus in the hope of getting admitted to their dream college.

“I don’t know where should I go now? First I was worried about result and now for my admission. I really don’t know what to do now and where to go,” Maina told DNA after she failed to secure her seat in Delhi’s prestigious Sri Ram College Commerce (SRCC). “It causes undue stress on the students as well as parents. There should be some procedure to make life easier for them,” says Rakesh Uppal, parent of Kirti Uppal, who scored 96%.

“These cut-offs are too high,” said Uppal, who had come all the way from Ludhiana with his family to get his daughter Kirti admitted into the college. “It causes undue stress on the student as well as their parents. Kapil Sibal has said he wants to reduce this stress. There should be some procedure to make life easier for Class XII students as well.”

SRCC’s high cut-off has once again sparked off the debate amongst the educationists across India as on one hand the government is scrapping the class X board examinations and on the other colleges increase their cut-offs.
