If one is planning to extract information related to Gujarat University then there is some good news.
The varsity has made changes in the procedure of procuring information through Right to Information (RTI) on Monday which will ultimately help in getting information on time.
The move is also being seen as a 'smart move' by the V-C as neither he, nor the registrar would remain responsible for providing information.
GU has appointed BN Patel, PA to registrar, as the first appellate authority to deal with appeals preferred under section-19 of the right to information act and academic section of the varsity. Apart from it, the directors of different schools in the varsity such as school of science, social science among others have been appointed as first appellate authorities while, the head of the departments will be public information officers or PIO.
However, experts believe that the move is welcoming as mostly V-Cs are never available for various reasons. This makes obtaining information longer. People will have some respite in seeking information now as they know where to approach directly.
According to Harish Pandya, founder member of Mahiti Adhikar Gujarat Pahal and an RTI activist, generally, the head of institute should be the first appellate authority as he has powers to give the required information. However, if any head of the institute is transforming his power to juniors, it will be taken as shying away from the responsibility which is not fair.
However, despite repeated attempts vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi was not available for comments.
