ShareAhmedabad: The Gujarat University (GU) completed 60 years of its inception on Monday. The varsity has contributed to the development of students in the state in more ways than one can imagine and has delivered to achieving what every Gujarati can boast of.
The university got the opportunity of imparting education to lakhs of students who were still struggling with the hangovers of British regime. It revolutionised the education system by ensuring that education was available to all students, those from the city as well as rural areas. In last six decades, seven more universities propped up, but they will never get the opportunities that GU managed to bag and capitalised on.
According to KS Shashtri, former vice-chancellor of the university, GU has been adopting the changes frequently as per the demand of the society. Initially, it was focused on twin opportunities-imparting medium of instruction, and eventually spread it to other parts of the state, especially in the rural, tribal areas; it was a real challenge.
After a decade, GU again incorporated various changes. In 1973-74, it revised its face value by giving recognition to and inviting effective participation of teachers and students. During this time, GU saw various changes such as formation of board of studies, restructuring senate and syndicate, among others. Throughout the seventies, GU brought about major changes by way of encouraging students' participation in administrative policies through GU court or senate.
"Ten years back, GU had 183 affiliated colleges with 12 recognised and 24 approved educational institutes. There were more than 3,000 PG teachers and more than 1.5 lakh students. Now, the figures have doubled," said Chandrakant Mehta, former pro-vice chancellor of the varsity.
Mehta further said that the university should also focus on strengthening its post graduate departments and researches.
