In conformity with the vision of the Gujarat University and the prerequisites of the evolving financial sector, the university has introduced a new coursePost Graduate Diploma in Investment and Financial Analysis (PGDIFA) at SD School of Commerce. The one year course enables the students to acquire advanced skills in financial analysis in a short period. This enhances their graduate level knowledge to specialised level thus increasing their employment potential.
This programme is also designed keeping in mind the significant developments that have taken place in the areas of finance, investment, law and regulations related to financial markets, banking and economics. Over and above, the programme is also helpful to CA, CS, ICWA students as well as students who want to go abroad for further study.
The PGDIFA programme aims at training and developing deserving graduates with a view to help them to acquire knowledge in finance area and then make them relevant persons for suitable employment including self-employment in the finance world.
One academic year has two semesters. Each semester is allotted four courses for the study. In this article we provide you the detailed programme of the first semester.
SEMESTER-I
The four courses of this semester mainly enhance the theoretical and core knowledge of the financial sector.
Financial Management: In commerce faculty financial management is treated as one of the most significant subjects. In this subject various aspects of financial management are covered in the chronological order so that student can easily understand the content and they can sustain their interest in the subject also. Business Economics & Quantitative Techniques: This course is divided into two parts (I) Business Economics and (II) Quantitative Techniques. All business activities directly or indirectly are dependent on economic environment. Business manager need to understand both the nature of macro economics environment in which they take their decisions and the nature of the market in which their firm operates. This course includes basics of quantitative techniques also which are needed to arrive at useful conclusion of analytical work which is undertaken. So to build up the analytical abilities of the students important topics of quantitative techniques are included in the syllabus. The following topics are covered under head of Quantitative Techniques- Descriptive Statistics, Correlation, Regression Multiple Regression, Decision Theory, Functions, and Probability.

In brief the basic objective to include this paper is to develop a good understanding of key economics concepts and principles and the ability to apply and use such principles for effective business administration in modern environment.
Financial Markets & Financial Services:To commence profitable business or to expand the business, the decision of creation of funds and application funds play key role. One of the significant segments of financial market is the capital market. Capital market is the market where borrowing and lending of long term funds takes place. The rapid growth of corporate entities has been made possible by the growth of these markets.
Along with capital market, money market, Bond Market, Mutual Funds Emerging financial Markets, Technology and Markets etc are also given equal value in this course, hence all these aspects of financial markets are covered in this course which are highly associated with commerce related curriculum. In addition to this, after liberalisation the horizons of businesses are not restricted to the domestic market but extended to the international level.
To do business in the international market appropriate knowledge of financial markets and financial services is to be obtained.
Another section of this paper is pertaining to financial services. Business entities are always in need of either long term funds or short term funds or both. The smooth availability of finance and different options for creation of funds reduces the pain of borrowers to run business with less trouble.
