Ahmedabad: Is this the end of the recession as we have known it over the past year? According to the limited data released by the placement cell of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) about the ongoing summer placements, the firms that stayed away from recruiting students last year have now returned to the campus.
Several companies from the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) segment had not visited IIMA last year because of the apparent slowdown. "Hindustan Unilever and Procter & Gamble, which are on the top of the preference list of students looking for careers in marketing, are back on campus to recruit summer interns for 2010. Diageo, Nokia and Coca-Cola were the other sought after firms on Day 0.5," said Nissim Nabar, a member of the media cell of IIMA.
There were also a substantial number of international offers on Day 0, unlike last year. The students who accepted domestic offers had an element of international postings as part of their packages. "Essentially, most students placed on Day 0 have the scope of international experience," said Rohan Desai, coordinator of the media cell.
On the second day of the summer placements, termed as Day 0.5, internships in marketing, general management, consulting and finance were offered. Tata Administrative Services and the Aditya Birla Group both offered general management roles. Put together, the companies saw more than 15 acceptances from the campus. These students will join various groups and companies across India and abroad for a two-month period.
Feedback Ventures and Fortress Financial Services from the infrastructure sector, one a consulting firm and the other a specialist in infrastructure, recruited for the first time at IIMA. Some other companies that returned to the institute this year and recruited from two to five interns are Citibank, Frost & Sullivan, Edelweiss and Anand Rathi.
"Overall, I would say Day 0.5 this year was similar in terms of roles offered, compared to Day 0.5 last year," said Himanshu Nema, secretary of the placement cell at IIMA.
