Confusion reigns even though the junior college admissions have gone offline. With only a day left for admissions to start, complaints continue to pour in.
Students allowed to keep term (ATKT) and those from other states claim that colleges have refused to accept their applications.
Krishna Perla, a student from God’s Valley High School, Panchgani, approached several colleges in south Mumbai, but was turned down by all of them. “No college is willing to accept my application. The moment they see that I am an ATKT student, they ask me to come again later. But they never specify what later is,” he said.
Similarly, students from other states are being turned down by colleges. Malesh Rane from Shivaji Vidyapeeth in Kolhapur, who scored 82% said most of the colleges he had approached said they were not accepting applications from outstation students.
The state government had declared that students availing admissions under the ATKT scheme were also required to submit their forms during the offline process. However, college principals claim they haven’t received any official notice. “We are awaiting a circular from the deputy director’s office. Until then, we are not considering applications of ATKT students,” said MB Kenkare principal, Patkar College, Goregaon.
But, officials from the education department say no circular will be issued. “Colleges do not have to admit these students in the first merit list. But, accommodate them in the seats that remain vacant by September 8. They should start accepting the students’ applications,” said an official.
Also, students claim that the number of seats displayed on the MKCL website do not match the actual number of seats available in the colleges. “The website shows that Jai Hind College has 52 seats. But, when we approached them, we were told there were no seats available,” said Sneha Mishra from Maa Bharati School in Bhayendar.
