Starting November 14, CRY (Child Relief and You) is organising a nationwide campaign to demand for three key amendments to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. They have partnered with 200 NGOs and will be reaching out to 500 villages across 18 states.

They amendments demanded are inclusion of children below six years as well between 15 to 18 years of age in the Act to ensure there is a school with qualified teachers and proper facilities within 1km of any habitation and allot 10% of India’s GDP to education.

“According to the Act, children can avail of free education only till the age of 15, that is till Std VIII, which is definitely not enough,” said Puja Marwaha, regional director, CRY. “The campaign will be carried out over the next two weekends.”

In Mumbai, they have arranged for three BEST buses which will move across the city halting at 35 destinations. People and children will be invited to sign on the charter asking for the amendments and to participate in the journey.
