CBSE class XI: Marks do count

Marks will be taken into account in case of equal cumulative grade point average, say school principals.

CBSE class XI: Marks do count

After obtaining results under the grade points (GP) and cumulative grade point average (CGPA) system, parents and students are confused about how they will get admission to class XI. However, principals of city schools say that there will be no problem for them in securing the admission.

The confusion among students stems from the fact that earlier it was clear that a student with 97.8% would get preference over one with 97.75%. But now students with 97.8% and 97.75% have got the same 10 CGPA. If there was only one seat left in the school for two students, who would get admission?

Speaking about the issue, Hemant Shah, principal of Prakash Higher Secondary School, said, "The CBSE will be giving details about the method for admission to class XI. Marks will be taken into consideration in case of equal CGPA." Sunil Trivedi, principal of Delhi Public School, Bopal said, "There may also be an aptitude test at the school level for the students having equal CGPA to decide the admission."

However, CBSE has issued a circular to all schools about giving admission to class XI, in which it has said that in case of two or more candidates obtaining equal CGPA (overall indicative percentage of marks), the overall merit of such candidates may be determined.

For Science based courses, candidates obtaining higher CGPA (indicative percentage of marks) in one compulsory language will get preference. Same is for commerce and humanities.
