On a normal day, Neelesh Misra would be busy writing lyrics for a Hindi film song and sending them off through his cell phone. But not now. Misra kicked his job to form a band called Nine and has been joined by three like-minded writers and singers from the industry.

“We were all working in Bollywood, but realised that we wanted greater space and opportunity to do things beyond films,” said Misra.

The other band members include Shilpa Rao, the female lead singer, who has sung for films like Salam-e-Ishq and Anwar; Abhishek Nailwal, the male lead; and Amartya Rahut, who is a composer.

There is chemistry and excitement in the air as the four get together for a practice session. The lyrics are written by Misra and music has been composed by Rahut. The common theme running through the songs is nostalgia. “The original concept and thoughts were penned by Neelesh. I have woven the songs together keeping the nostalgia tone in mind. Even if one track is fast-paced, it still gives you that lingering feel,” said Rahut.

The debutants plan to cut an album, called Nine Lost Memories, with these songs by the end of the year.

The name Nine may sound unique for a music band that primarily sings Hindi songs, but Misra explains it by saying, “We wanted the name to be acceptable across audiences. We will be touring across India, and even abroad. People can remember and connect easily with Nine.”

Unlike in professional bands, there are no rules or pre-set contract between Nine’s band members. The four musicians bring their experiences in the Hindi film music industry and are hoping they can establish a direct connect with the audiences. “We are aware of the music scenario and want to find a way to do some good creative work together,” said Shilpa Rao.

The band will make its debut at the Kala Ghoda festival on Friday night.
