A global classroom, where students from around the world collaborate on projects in different subjects, has become a reality at many Indian schools. The International School Award (ISA), an initiative of British Council, was given to schools which inculcate “internationalism” in their curriculum.
A city-based educational institution, Gear Innovative School has earned this award for 2009. “We are proud to be one of the two schools in Karnataka selected for the award. The whole school has warmed up to the opportunity and worked on showcasing what they were doing,” said M Srinivasan, principal, Gear Innovative School.
Aside from Gear, another school from the state to have received the recognition is the Canara Girls’ School, Mangalore.
“The schools are assessed on the projects they do with schools from around the world on different subjects and across all grades (from first grade to 10th grade),” said Samyuktha Balakrishnan, manager school projects (South India), British Council.
Educational institutions are required to document all completed projects. “The crux of this programme is meeting British Council’s expectation of adding ‘international dimensions’ to the regular curriculum work. We knew that only a project-based approach will provide this dimension. For instance while studying the Pythogorus Theorem, students were encouraged to research the birthplace of Pythogorus, his upbringing and the current status of such places to add an international dimension to it,” Srinivasan added.
The official awards function is slated to be held at Delhi on November 9.
