Aided schools in Bangalore come under lens

The state government will form a high-level committee to probe the irregularities in aided schools across the state, minister for primary and secondary education Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri announced on Wednesday.

The minister said at the legislative council that he had taken this step after receiving complaints of misuse of government funds by aided schools and colleges.

“I will get first hand reports on such institutions. The committee will have a time frame to submit the report. I will start working in this direction from today itself. There should be a healthy atmosphere in the aided educational institutions. The managements cannot blackmail the officers by opening the institutions in the names of politicians,” he explained.

JD (S) leader MC Nanaiah appealed to Kageri to form division-wise committees to carry out the probe. The government should keep out officers who collude with fraudsters, he added. Nanaiah exhorted the minister to carry out an impartial probe. “You may come under pressure from all leaders of the BJP, Congress, JD (S) and Communist parties. But you should not buckle under pressure,” he underlined.

Leader of the opposition SR Patil maintained that such an investigation was indeed necessary. Earlier, the issue was raised by BJP MLCs Shashil Namoshi and Dr Shivayogiswamy. Namoshi urged the government to take action against Praveen’s Education Institute of Gulbarga, which was allegedly involved in a series of frauds.

Congress MLC Allama Prabhu Patil asked Namoshi that though the fraud had been taking place for 20 years, why the issue was being raised only now. He urged the government to investigate all aided schools who indulged in such acts, instead of targeting a single institute.

In his reply, Kageri said that he would initiate action against the particular school management and other aided schools which misuse government funds. He lauded the contributions made by private schools in the education sector, but said that action against black sheep was necessary.
