Kapil Sibal's suggestion that class XI and XII students of all boards should follow a common curriculum for mathematics and science have found many takers in the city schools.
School authorities feel that it will have a far-reaching effect. "It is a very good decision and I welcome it," said Fr Fernand Durai, principal of St Xavier's School Loyola Hall, a state-board school.
He said that once implemented, it will provide a common syllabus and a platform for children to compete. "The standard of education in every state will rise and people will no longer say that the level of education in a particular state is better compared to other," said Durai.
Jayshree Joshi, principal of Swastik Satva Vikas, which follows the CBSE system of education said, "At times children feel confused about the type of board that they should select once they're done with class X."
"They ask the pros and cons of various boards but when there is uniformity, the problem is solved. I think that such a system should have been incorporated much earlier," said Joshi. Anupuma Singh of Anand Niketan School, which follows the ICSE board, echoed similar sentiments.
"Basically in principle, I agree, because ultimately mathematics and science are concept based subjects and uniformity is needed. I think this is a step in the right direction and it will help students across the country," said Singh.
However some schools were of the opinion that this will hardly bring any changes and will instead create problems for students who have been following the state board all throughout.
Udgam School principal Radhika Iyer, which follows the CBSE syllabus, said, "Right now it sounds good to me but I'm not aware of its application in the future."
She said there was no harm in trying it out, although as far as Gujarat was concerned the CBSE and state board syllabus are almost the same for mathematics and science.
Ranjeeta Gill, principal, secondary and higher secondary, HBK, a state-board school said, "Till 10th there has to be connectivity in syllabus. The policy seems good, but going ahead with the project is a cause of concern to me. It is convenient only if the syllabus is uniform from the very beginning itself."
