Ahmedabad civic body to conduct surprise checks on water tankers

In a decision taken during its health committee meeting on Wednesday, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to conduct surprise checks on water being provided by private contractors.

According to Dr Suresh Patel, chairman of health and solid waste management committee, AMC health staff will conduct surprise checks on water being transported in tankers throughout the city. "We want to control the water-borne diseases like jaundice and cholera through these raids," said Patel.

Raikhad corporator, Liyaqat Ghori demanded immediate action against all water suppliers, whose business has started flourishing after the water cut in the city in the meeting.

"No one knows about the quality of the water being supplied through tankers, bottles or pouches. AMC must act against such suppliers. If checked properly, majority of these suppliers will be found to be flouting health norms or without proper licenses," said Ghori.

Dr Patel assured Ghori that steps will be taken against all erring suppliers. He said, "Our teams will either visit the pumping house of such suppliers, or stop tankers on the road and conduct immediate PHS check." He claimed that more than 40 mini-factories churning out unhealthy drinking water pouches were sealed in May.
