This year 525 secondary schools have managed to get 100% results in the class X state board exams. However, there is a dip in the number of schools getting cent per cent results compared to last year’s 699 schools.

Also, the numbers of schools getting zero per cent results has gone up from 10 in 2008 to 21 this year.

Like last year, there was a tie for second and third positions. This year, Shefali Mhaddalkar, Sanket Patil and Nishigandha Kerure tied for second position with 96.3% marks, while for the third position, Tejal Pradhan and Mrinmai Jadhav held ground with 96.15%.

The results have also revealed that the rate of success was more in English medium schools rather than Marathi. While Marathi medium schools in Mumbai division had a success rate of 71.76%, English medium schools stood at 90.96%. This year, 1,58,162 candidates appeared from Marathi medium, while 1,10,745 students appeared from the English medium schools.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government’s plan to introduce general mathematics in class X will be put to test next academic year. Students who have opted for general mathematics will appear for their board exams in March 2010. Educationists believe this move will help in increasing the passing percentage of SSC students as many students fail in mathematics resulting in a poor passing percentage.

After the success of the class-improvement scheme (CIS) last year, the state government has decided to continue with the scheme this year as well. The scheme gives students who have passed in the board exams an opportunity to improve their grades. The exams under CIS are conducted in October.
