A member of the top brass at the University of Pune (UoP) and a clerk in the examination department have been sent show cause notices for alleged involvement in a fake mark sheet case.
The scam came to light last year, when it was discovered that the mark sheet of a commerce graduate, Rajesh Savlani was tampered with. The then vice chancellor, Raghunath Shevgaonkar, set up a committee to inquire into the matter and it submitted its report in August last year. The committee recommended action against two officials, but it was not done.
After sitting on the report for nearly six months, current acting vice-chancellor, Sanjay Chahande, finally gave the go-ahead for show cause notices to be sent to the two staffers. “Yes, it is true that two people have been sent notices in this regard. I cannot reveal the names. They have been given 15 days to reply,” said ML Jadhav, UoP registrar.
Sources said that according to the report, two officials i.e. deputy registrar Vidyadhar Yadav and a clerk at the examination department, Mahesh Bhambare, were found guilty.
“The student went to China and applied for a job. The mark sheet came to the university for cross- reference when the company inquired with the varsity. While cross-checking the marks, it was found that the mark sheet did not match with the ledger records.
That’s when scam came to light and a full inquiry started,” said a source. The student had received three marks in accounts paper 2 of third year of BCom, but he connived with some officials and changed it to 13 marks.
The committee recommended action against the two officials besides suggesting changes in the results declaration and mark sheets preparation process.
