The class X results of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) were announced on Thursday. Of the 9,66,114 students who took the examination in March, 6,29,140 or 65.12 per cent were successful.

This year’s performance was the worst in the last three years. The pass percentage was 3.98 per cent lower than that of last year. In 2011, the percentage of successful candidates was 71.06 per cent.

It was the first result after the GSHSEB changed the exam pattern since the 2012 academic year. According to the new system, 70 per cent weightage was given for marks secured in the GSHSEB exam and the rest was based on formative and summative exams conducted by schools throughout the year.

Even when the expectation was of a bumper result because of the new exam pattern, the 2013 results turned out to be the lowest in the last three years. The examination was held at 758 centres across the state. According to GSHSEB officials, the Samlod centre performed the best with 97.53 per cent students having cleared the exam while the Dudhiya was the lowest with pass percentage being 12.13. Among the districts, in Kheda, 84.22 per cent students passed while Jamnagar brought up the rear with 47.51 per cent.

It seems subjects like mathematics, science

and technology have done the maximum harm to students. While only 71.11 per cent passed in mathematics, 75.66 per cent passed in science and technology subjects.

As many as 379 schools in the state scored 100 per cent success whereas 729 students made 100 pc in 2012.

Again, 3,787 students managed to get A1 grade (91 per cent to 100 per cent), followed by 36,257 students securing A2 grade (81 per cent to 90 per cent), 1,02,319 students got B1 and 1,80,551 got B2. Of course, the maximum number of students — 1,90,226 — made it to grade C1.

GSHSEB chairman R R Varsani said the performance does not have any connection with the new exam pattern. “If one observes carefully, of the 41,774 students, who appeared for the exam from the Gujarat State Open School Society, only 9,050 have passed. This would be one factor which could have brought the performance down. Besides, examination of answer books and calculation of marks given by schools have been done with utmost care and strictness,” said Varsani.
