After the declaration of HSC results on Friday, students will now be queuing up for admission into degree courses.

City college principals say there is no need for students vying for admission into colleges under the University of Mumbai (MU) to worry, as there is no dearth of seats in colleges.

According to sources at the MU, a total of 2,24,325 seats are available for the 2,13,281 HSC and ICSE students who cleared their papers. CBSE Class XII results are awaited.

“All the students will get admission. Not all students are vying for admission into traditional colleges. Some will opt for competitive exams such as the IIT-JEE, and if they qualify, they will surely be out of the competition for traditional college admissions.” Said Dr T A Shivare, principal, Hinduja College.

He added that some other students might also send their applications to deemed universities or autonomous institutes, which are not under the university, decreasing the number of students competing for seats even further.

Dr Madhavi Pethe, principal of M L Dahanukar College, agreed. “Not all students are interested in a mainstream degree education. Some students will opt for a vocational education,” she added.

Another south Mumbai college principal pointed out that several students drop out of the education system after clearing Class XII exams.

The MU always provides room for an increase in the number of seats, if needed.

“While recently there has been no increase in the intake capacity of the colleges, permission could be granted once the admissions start. The previous year as well, after the admissions were started, some colleges applied for an increase in the intake capacity, considering the high demand for certain courses. There could be a similar development even this year,” said an official from the university.
