Gone are the days when e-learning and e-assignments were the norm for students of distance education. With the extensive reach that smartphones have today, mobile apps, like the iPhone app EduNext, allow students to download their assignments, work on them, upload them back on the app, and also get the evaluator’s remarks on their performance.

EduNxt can be used for various distance education programmes such MBA, BBA, MCA, MSc, BSc, BA and MA.

“The assignments are aligned with the topics covered in the syllabus, and they are assigned as per the roll numbers of the students,” says Shanath Kumar, head, e-learning, Sikkim Manipal University for Distance Education.

In addition to assignments, the app also has quizzes that are part of internal assessments that students can take. Being free for students, EduNxt has anywhere between 5,000-10,000 students logging and doing assignments on any given day, says Kumar.

“Often students for distance education are professionals, who are strapped for time. And nowadays, everyone is tech-savvy and has the latest gadget. So it makes sense to have an app that can be easily accessible for students,” says Kumar.

Moreover, the app also helps in setting reminders for assignments. Says a student who is pursuing her MSc (IT), while simultaneously working with a BPO firm: “Often, we tend to forget that a particular assignment has to be completed in the next few days’ time. So the reminders are really beneficial. Moreover, since we can download assignments on our phone, we can start working on them when we are on the move, or during our office breaks as well. It benefits students like us who have to manage both studies and work.”

More than 1.5 crore smartphones were shipped to  India within the first two quarters of 2013, as per estimates of an American advisory firm, IDC.
