Undergraduates students at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) have bagged job offers with slightly higher pay package than postgraduates, even as the seniors pipped them in number of job offers, say the statistics released by the institute after completion of first phase of the campus placement on December 18.

The average salary this year is Rs 11.32 lakhs. This is slightly less than the salary packages offered by major employers last year, say sources. Job offers have been pouring in from various companies in the last couple of weeks at the IIT-B.

The difference between the salaries of BTech and MTech is somewhere 5-10%. Companies usually prefer BTech students over MTech and MSc students, but offering better salaries to undergrads is something new, say professors.

"Opportunities are always more for the undergrads than the postgraduates mainly because in any company there are more openings for general profile people than the specialists (postgraduates). Since BTech degree of the IIT is considered as very prestigious, students do get better salary packages," said a professor.

Another professor said, "Difference in salaries is visible only at the entry level. After that your talent speaks. Nevertheless, many BTech students leave the job after two-three years and go for MBA."

Over 50% postgraduates remain unplaced every year at IIT Bombay compared to nearly 30% students at BTech level.

About 275 companies visited the campus for the hiring process and have selected close to 950 students across all the programmes. The institute didn't provide number of students who registered for the campus placement. A year ago, 1,300 students including BTech, MTech, MSc and PhD were registered for the campus placement.

"Total 309 BTech students have received job offers, while 371 MTech and 169 Dual Degree students are also placed in the first phase. The percentage of students placed is higher in Dual Degree and MTech students against the B Tech one," states the Institute's release. The Phase-2 of placement season will commence from January 2017.
