In this tech crazy era, college students are planning to use mobile apps to spread awareness about breast cancer among economically challenged women.

After downloading, understanding and studying the content related to breast self-examination, causes and early detection of breast cancer; city students will go about educating factory workers, maids and others from lower rungs of society.

Nikita, a diploma student at the JD Institute of Fashion Technology, says each of the 120 students at her institute will go about educating at least 5 women.

“After using the app, HCG BCA, to get ourselves educated, we will guide local women and coax them to go for screening in case they detect something amiss.” says Nikita.

Doctors and social workers say awareness and self-breast examination is key in early detection of breast cancer.

“All women above 20 should undertake self-breast examination, and if they find any problem, plan the future course of action,” says Pratima Suresh, co-ordinator at the PoornaSudha Cancer Foundation.

Doctors say mammography, which is the only way to detect the cancer in its initial stages, is important.

“After 40, all women must undergo mammography once every two years. The frequency should be increased to once annually after crossing 50,” says oncologist Dr Ramakrishna R Sudhindra.

But statistics show in Karnataka, less than 1% women actually undergo mammography annually.

The students have also lined up an exhibition of photographs and accessories made by them in support of breast cancer awareness.

”Throughout October we are planning to dress up in an element of pink to simply show solidarity with the cause. Proceeds from the exhibition will go towards the cause,” says Nikita.
