Some good news for school students who hate maths. The state board has decided to drastically trim down portions of the mathematics syllabus for students of classes 9 and 10 from the coming academic year (2013-14).

The mathematics paper, comprising algebra and geometry which was of a total of 150 marks, will now carry a total of 100 marks, the board has decided.

While the algebra and geometry papers will carry 40 marks each, 10 marks in each section will be assigned for internal exams.

Until now, mathematics was the only subject with 150 marks weightage for classes 9 and 10.

Earlier this month, a circular sent to all schools said that vast portions have been taken off from the algebra paper of class 9. This includes topics such as ratio-proportion-variation and graphical representation of data histogram. At the same time, topics like coordinate geometry, mensuration and geometric construction have been pulled off the geometry paper.

For class 10, chapters like geometric proportion, additional theorem and ogives have been deleted from the algebra section. A large portion of basic proportionality theorem and Pythagoras’s theorem application, coordinate geometry and geometric constructions have been omitted from the geometry syllabus.

Although the teachers are yet to be told about it, the move has invited criticism from mathematics teachers who said that reducing marks doesn’t necessarily need cutting down of syllabus.

Mathematics teacher from VN Sule School in Dadar, Gauri Dighe , said there was no need to delete these topics, some of which are very important.

Syllabuses for mathematics and science had been revised only two years ago.

“Three years ago, the board converted the social studies paper from 150 to 100 marks but there was no change in syllabus. Any major change should be announced a year earlier,” said another teacher.

Officials of the board, however, claimed that the omission is in sync with the syllabus the Maharashtra State Curriculum Framework 2010. For the past five years, the state board has been offering easier version of mathematics (general mathematics) to class 9 and 10 students who find the subject tough.

Less burden
About 35 lakh students enroll in classes 9 and 10 annually in state board schools across Maharashtra. Some schools and coaching classes have already started teaching class 10 students under the old syllabus. Schools have not got new text books have not yet arrived.
