Though sports as an activity is encouraged at a younger stage in a students life, the focus shifts exclusively on academics as the students graduate to higher classes. Even if a child shows good performance at a particular sport, both teachers and parents fail to nurture his/ her talent. Given the scenario, very few are able to concentrate on their sporting ability. "This attitude has lead to India producing lesser number of atheletes and sportspersons than its actual capacity,"says Udit Sheth, managing director, TransStadia, a sporting company..

To encourage such youngsters and create professionals out of them, TransStadia has signed a 10-year alliance agreement with Association of Indian Unviersities (AIU) to tap the potential of India’s young sporting enthusiasts. "India has over 400,000 student athletes, imagine if at least two per cent of them turn pro; then India at any given time will have an additional 8000 high-performing athletes across sports," explains Sheth.

According to the agreement, TransStadia, will conduct sports competitions across 574 universities and 35, 539 colleges comprising 20.3 million students. The focus will be on sports like — basketball, athletics, badminton, volleyball, football, tennis and boxing."We will be setting up a designed structure to conduct regular sport competitions on the college campus," informs Sheth. Participants of these competitions can either take up a full time career in a sport of their choice or can also opt for allied jobs like a coaching, sports journalist or manager.

Those students who show the capability of being in the professional arena, will be encouraged to take further training and play the game seriously. However, the intention of the agreement is not to discourage the student from academics. Since not everyone needs to be 'Sachin Tendulkar of a game', the idea of this partnership is to identify and  keep the passion for the sport alive in the student. At the same time, they are also expected to complete their degrees. "So that when one is not playing fulltime, one is capable to make a living on a regular job," says Sheth.

Through this platform TransStadia aims to create 4000 athletes for the country. Based on their skill and love for the sport, half of them can also be a part of the contingent that represents India in international sports events. "It will be three times the number in the contingent that will be heading to the Asian Games 2014," signs off Sheth.
