Call it the side effect of strict evaluation in class X exams this year or students’ dimming interest in science subjects. At the end of admission process in city schools, around 21% of total seats in the class XI (science) have remained vacant.

There are 19,000 seats for class XI (science) in city schools. “Admission process for this year is over. However, 4,100 seats are still vacant. The figure is higher as compared to last year when 16% of seats were vacant,” said district education officer RI Patel.

In 2012, of the nearly 18,500 seats, around 3,000 remained vacant. Patel pointed out that this year around 500 seats were added as new schools offered class XI, XII science.

“It has been observed in last few years that students have been increasingly taking up commerce stream. This year’s tough class X result may also be one of the reasons for reduction in number of students opting to study science stream subjects,” said Patel.

This year, in the exams conducted by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) for class X, nearly 30% students failed in mathematics and 24% failed in science and technology subjects. Strict evaluation in these two subjects had a direct impact on total scores — another factor which might have influenced students in their choice. However, for a few, the scenario came as a surprise.

Principal of the CN Vidyalaya Hitendra Trivedi agrees that the usual rush for admission in science stream is not seen this year. “This year, it is different as not many students from outside the school came to enquire about class XI science stream. Though all the seats in our school are filled, we have observed reduction in number of students opting for science stream,” he said.

Director of HB Kapadia Group of Schools Ranjeeta Gill, however, feels that this is a temporary phase. “Looking at the students’ flow at our school, we have increased one section in English medium class XI (science). I believe, even today parents want their children to study science stream,” said Gill.
