The Congress government has decided to re-examine its BJP predecessor’s sanction for setting up a slew of private universities in the state.

Higher education minister RV Deshpande on Friday told reporters that the permission given for starting 22 private universities during the BJP regime would be reviewed. He said a three-member committee would be set up to check the infrastructure and other facilities provided by the universities as per the Private Universities Act.

“We will take decision in each case based on the report to be submitted by the committee about the infrastructure and other necessities. I have inspected Azim Premji University and it has good infrastructure. As many as 20 universities are yet to start operating,” he said.

Model degree colleges, IIT
Deshpande said the government would push for developing model degree colleges and establishing Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in the state. Under the 11th five-year plan, the Centre sanctioned 20 model colleges for the state. The state will send proposals soon to get the project implemented in the 12th plan, he added.

“As the Centre rejected the state’s request to allot an IIT to the state, we have now proposed that we will provide land, infrastructure and also proposed to extend financial support for the period of first five years for the institution,” he said, hoping the Centre would take a decision that would benefit the state.

The minister said the proposed Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) for Dharwad would have as partner the Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (Keonics). Union human resources development minister Pallam Raju has assured that he would expedite the implementation of this project.

Deshpande further said a proposal has been sent to the chief minister to allow his department a free hand to take up new projects in key sectors like health, education and poverty alleviation without being weighed down by budgetary constraints.
