Ruia College aims for pvt university status

The college is seeking to get autonomy helping it to run as private universities.

The Ruia College is aiming high. At its platinum jubilee function on Tuesday, of which President Pratibha Patil was the chief guest, it revealed its plan to get the status of a private university.

College principal Suhas Pednekar said, "After autonomy, we must think of becoming an independent entity."  Pednekar was referring to the pending self-financing universities Bill, which will help institutes with good calibre run as private universities.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, who was also present at the ceremony, picked up on the moment to talk about the Bill. "It will allow qualified institutions to impart education with better facilities. But, it has to ensure that education is made inclusive and accessible to all."

Commenting on the education system, President Patil referred to the gap between the skills required by the industry and those taught at institutes.

A new contributor development lab of the Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research was inaugurated by the President on the same evening.
