Pune colleges stood out at the Baja SAEINDIA 2012 held from February 17 to19 at Pithampur in Indore. Thirteen colleges from Pune reached the final round of Baja SAEINDIA, which witnessed participation of over 100 teams from top engineering colleges across India.

The PES Modern College of Engineering came second (first runner-up) and also bagged the first position in Hill Climb Award category. The AISSMS College of Engineering (AISSMS-CoE) came second in the Hill Climb Award category and also walked away with the Endurance award.

The College of Engineering Pune (CoEP) and Maeer’s Maharashtra Academy of Engineering won the Acceleration award and Raftaar award respectively. The Baja SAE competition tasks the students to design, fabricate and validate a single-seater four-wheeler off the road vehicle to take part in the series of events spread over a course of three days.

The vehicles are tested for sound engineering, agility in terms of gradability, speed, acceleration and maneuverability and finally its ability to endure the back breaking durability test. Team Resonance Racing of AISSMS-CoE won the overall first prize in the Endurance Race category and runners-up in Hill Climb category, bagging a total prize worth Rs2.5 lakh.

The AISSMS-CoE Resonance Racing team was founded by Anand Aiyer and has won several awards over the years. A team of 25 young and passionate budding engineering students of mechanical, production and electrical streams, is headed by Bharat Gaikwad. Team vice-captain, Moiyyad Vora said, “Winning at Baja is a dream come true and this year, we were confident of pocketing the Endurance race award and we accomplished it. We worked very hard for the past 6 months to build an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) right from the scratch.”

The chassis, suspension-steering, braking systems, tyre assembly, engine compartment, assembling, painting and testing of the vehicle was all done during the on-campus workshop.
“Our objective was to make a durable, reliable and aesthetic vehicle that can endure the torturous track. It is the ‘never say die’ attitude of the team and precise planning and execution of the project that made us winners,” said Vora.

The team comprises champion driver Oshan Kothadiya, along with designers, welders, procurement experts and marketing wizards. On his experience at the Baja SAEINDIA 2012, Kothadiya said, “It is the country’s biggest event, nurturing and moulding students to excel in their respective fields. It is not just a racing competition, but a design challenge  that encourages us to think out of the box.”
