The process of online registration for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination started on Wednesday, but it wasn’t devoid of glitches. The server went down for some students, while others found it to be running slow, making it difficult to fill forms. Teachers, who were trained to help students in filling up the forms, were found guiding frantic students in a few colleges.

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) decided to start the process of online registration for students, in an attempt to make the process of registration for HSC exams a paper-free affair. The state board also provided training to IT teachers in junior colleges to help students in completing the registration.

The board has provided a CD to install the software and carry on with the form-filling process in advance. “They can upload the CD, complete with all the details, to the official website,” said Laxmikant Pandey, chairman, Mumbai Division. He added, “We have instructed them to not wait till the last day, lest they encounter a slow server. “Since the uploading process begins today, there may be a chance of the server slowing down. But, this will not continue,” Pandey assured
Uday Nere, a teacher, informed that in many schools students faced trouble while logging in to the official website to register for the examination. However, students and teachers appreciated online registrations, as it is not time-consuming and is paper-free. “If only it [online registration] were introduced a little earlier. It is better than the paper-pencil method,” said Swati Naik, a student of CKT College.

Many students faced trouble while filling up the form as they were not aware of the mandatory options. “Students, especially those from reservation categories, have to fill in all the options correctly,” said Nere. He added, “There are students from ST, SC and OBC backgrounds, and they have to be very careful while filling the form, as once they make mistake, it will stay.”

About 50 IT teachers from junior colleges across Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad regions were imparted training in the online exam registration form filling process. Even the concept of online registration is novel to students, they’re finding it convenient.

“In online registration, they can rewrite as many times as they want before finally submitting it. In the paper-pencil method, they would have to fill their forms manually, and if they committed errors, they were asked to fill another form. The online process mitigates this problem,” said a board official, adding that submission of the forms will become faster.

“The registration fees will be collected manually by students’ schools or junior colleges. Private students appearing for the examination will be required to fill Form 17 online, for which the board will assign some schools and junior colleges as centres.

The online registration process will continue till December 6. Thereafter students can fill the form up to December 12, but with a late fee.
