After declaring exceptionally high cut-offs in the first few lists, Delhi University is now facing the problem of vacant seats in many colleges due to which the varsity has been forced to come out with the ninth and tenth cut-off lists.

Few colleges, including Ramjas, had released a notice seeking applications from students for the vacant seats. The colleges had decided to offer admissions on the basis of merit which is against the varsity rules. Following reports of colleges flouting varsity rules to fill the vacant seats, officials decided to declare the new cut-offs.

The new cut-off lists for all categories would be released on Saturday and Tuesday. The admissions will go on till July 31. “We got to know that a sizeable number of seats for reserved categories are still lying vacant in many colleges and we need to fill them all. Even general category seats are vacant in some colleges. We will release two more cut-offs to fill these empty seats,” said J M Khurana, dean, students welfare.

At Ramjas College, 31 seats in various courses, including 16 general category seats for the Commerce course, are lying vacant. Thirty-one seats in various courses are also lying vacant in  the OBC category. Twenty-two seats in SC category, 57 seats in ST category and 26 seats in Person with Disability (PwD) categories are also available.

“As initial cut-offs are really high, many seats go vacant, but we cannot take the risk of coming out with low cut-offs as that will result in excess admissions. Also, after some days many students cancel their admissions, leading to many seats going vacant. That is why we have to come out with many cut-offs to ensure the seats in all colleges are filled,” said Khurana.
